Feature extraction and clustering analysis of highway congestion

•Proposed framework to categorize and label congestion patterns automatically using clustering analysis.•Generic and domain-specific features are compared in the clustering application.•Watershed is used to separate different fundamental elements in a pattern.•The domain-specific approach qualitatively and quantitatively performs better than the generic approach.•The generic features perform well in detecting local details in patterns.
