Optimal selection and release problem in software testing process: A continuous time stochastic control approach

•We study a joint selection and release problem for a software testing process.•The problem is formulated as a continuous time stochastic control model.•A threshold structure of the optimal release policy is derived.•Simple structures of the optimal selection policy are obtained.•A case study is conducted to verify the effectiveness of our model.
