•New phase (Co,W,Ta)3B2 was found in the transient liquid phase joint.•The preferred growth orientation of the borides was 〈0 0 1〉matrix.•Borides enjoy a significant orientation relationship with the substrate.•The direction of concentration gradient of boron govern growth orientation.
