Burden of macro- and micro-vascular complications of type 2 diabetes in Bangladesh

•In Bangladesh, there is a paucity of research-based evidence that addressed the burden of diabetes related macro- and micro-vascular complications on hospitalisation and average annual cost of care, hence the objective of this study.•Overall, 63.4% of the participants had complications of which 14.8% and 20.7% had macro- and micro-vascular complications respectively and 27.9% had both.•Majority of the complications appeared as the key drivers for hospitalisation as well as increased healthcare cost.•This study highlights the early diagnosis of complications through access to robust monitoring and subsidised early screening programs.
