Comparison of two article-level, field-independent citation metrics: Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI) and Relative Citation Ratio (RCR)

•We reproduce the Relative Citation Ratio (RCR) using the Scopus database, to extend the metric beyond the biomedical subject area.•We compare the RCR to another article-level, field-normalised metric, the Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI).•The FWCI and RCR of articles correlate strongly across numerous subject areas.•Both metrics are comparably stable across different subject areas of research.•We present results of correlations, distributions and application to research university benchmarking for both metrics.
