Application of retrofitted design and optimization framework based on the exergy analysis to a crude oil distillation plant

•The distribution of exergy loss in the entire crude oil distillation process is analyzed.•Several exergy-efficiency based retrofitting and optimization schemes are proposed.•The minimal exergy loss is adopted as the objective function in the optimization.•The improved process shows higher exergy efficiency and lower process costs.
