•FeOx intra-gap states on Bi2WO6 enhances Norfloxacin degradation under light.•Bi2WO6-FeOx was found to degrade NFX removal within one hour.•Evidence for the Bi2WO6-FeOx catalyst behaving as a semiconductor is presented.•A redox mechanism is suggested for the reactive oxygen species (ROS).
