•CoupModel is constrained by year-round CO2 fluxes, soil temperature and moisture.•The model-data fusion approach suggests that the studied ecosystem is currently a sink of CO2.•High non-growing season respiration markedly reduces annual CO2 sink capacity.•Snow depth, soil moisture and summer warmth are important factors for CO2 fluxes.
