•A novel poly(ionic liquid)s (PIL) was designed and synthesized.•The cellulose aerogel was conveniently modified by PIL via a Schiff base reaction.•The modified cellulose aerogel showed a superior adsorption capacity toward BSA.•The modified cellulose aerogel could isolate BSA from bovine calf serum.
