•The high sensitivity YBCO step edge type HTS rf SQUID sensor is fabricated with 66 fT/Hz1/2.•The HTS rf SQUID based ULF NMR system is built.•The high SNR FID signal of 40 dB was achieved by the HTS rf SQUID.
