Automatic trimap generation and artifact reduction in alpha matte using unknown region detection

•An approach for automatic trimap generation for image matting is proposed.•The trimaps generated by the proposed scheme can reduce artifacts in alpha mattes.•Alpha mattes computed by our optimal trimaps are processed faster than when using trimaps from previous works.•Performance of the proposed method is evaluated on two datasets.
