•Developed a data-driven pedestrian origin-destination and route choice model by learning from video data.•The data-driven model can be used for capacity analysis of the building layout.•Enhanced the route choice model by taking into account the crowd density in the building layout on route choice.•Developed the crowd density aware route choice model through virtual reality experiments and Support Vector Classification.
