•Oxidative DNA damage occurs in patients with Alzheimer’s disease.•Even increased oxidative DNA damage can be detected in plasma.•DNA repair gene OGG1 Ser326Cys polymorphism influences oxidative DNA damage level.•Patients carrying Cys326 variant of OGG1 have a higher oxidative DNA damage.
