•Base excision repair (BER) pathway is important pathway to maintain genetic integrity.•XRCC1 and OGG1 genes are important candidate of BER pathway.•Genetic abnormalities in these genes may resulted in DNA damage and excessive proliferation in different cancer including gastric cancer.
