•The COPM/P and COMP/S are more sensitive to changes during treatment than the PODCI/UE and PODCI/P.•The PODCI/UE and PODCI/P have a ceiling effect early in the course of hand therapy treatment.•PROMs that use patient-derived goals are valuable in evaluating the effectiveness of hand therapy.
