•Dual and Triple paradigms solve the gaze dependency problem.•Average ITR is significantly improved for the Dual and Triple paradigms.•Equally good average character detection accuracy for single and Dual protocols.•The Dual RSVP paradigm has best balance between ITR and character detection accuracy.
