•Ten Toxoplasma gondii strains were isolated from black rats in the Island of Fernado de Noronha, Brazil.•Five genotypes were found, of which three are known and two are new.•Virulence studies revealed low and intermediate virulence of T. gondii strains from black rats.•Island of Fernado de Noronha presents a high variability of Toxoplasma gondii strains in Black-rats.
