Boiling water cooled travelling wave reactor

•The possibility of a boiling water cooled travelling wave reactor is studied and confirmed.•Breeding is sufficient for reaching the criticality from depleted uranium, if the pressure is low.•Burn-up reaches up to 40% and the natural uranium utilisation is improved by 50 times.•1-D numerical thermal hydraulics and neutronic burn-up coupled calculations are carried out.
