•We test the effect of transaction costs and competitive payments on the disposition effect (DE).•The DE is unaffected by transaction costs and competitive payments.•Women have higher DE, but the difference is only significant in the second half of the experiment.•Women sell fewer losing assets throughout the experiment.•Difficulty recognizing one's mistakes and optimism are strong predictors of DE.
