•This is a systematic review of game-based interventions applied to human cognition.•Interventions were delivered using commercial, adapted or applied video games.•Ninety-one papers were included and seventy-two video games were analyzed.•Score system and narrative context were the two most used game-element.•There is lack of detail description about game-elements used in cognitive interventions.
