•Architecture uses 2D textures and texture coordinates to implement thematic layers.•Independence between associated data and geometry of 3D models.•Layers reside in GPU memory and all the operations are also computed in GPU.•Data-transfers between CPU and GPU are closed to zero.•Size of the editing tool does not affect the performance during the editing process.
