•Thermo-hydraulic performances of millimetric square zigzag channels are studied.•The impacts of fluid velocity and straight section length between bends are studied.•The conditions to obtain periodic or non-periodic flow are investigated.•A performance factor is used to assess the efficiency of zigzag channels.
