Integrated Multi-Vapor Micro Collector-Injector (µCOIN) for µGC

A microscale collector-injector (μCOIN), consisting of a passive micro preconcentrator (μPP) and a progressively heated micro injector (μPHI), is described. The μPP achieved predictable, nearly constant, zero-power (diffusional) sampling rates for 24 hr (at ~1 mg/m 3 ) and over a 2,500-fold concentration range (for 15-min samples). The μPHI achieved injections <; 250 ms wide at ≤ 0.5 mL/min. An ionic-liquid surface modifier imparted high selectivity for polar compounds to the carbon adsorbents employed. A hybrid-integrated μCOIN showed encouraging preliminary results and a monolithic μCOIN has been fabricated. μCOIN promises to enable low-power micro gas chromatographic (μGC) analyses of vapor mixtures in numerous applications.
