•We study disadvantaged children to investigate their development of theory of mind.•Scores appear to be much lower than for children from higher socio-economic backgrounds.•Performance improves greatly when the presence of other children is made salient.•This result suggests that policies could conceivably reduce the skills gap for SES children.
