•A ternary nanostructured α-Fe2O3/Au/TiO2 photoanode is fabricated.•The photocurrent density is increased by ∼4-folds for photoelectrocatalytic water splitting.•A photoelectrocatalytic mechanism related to the reconstructed interfaces is proposed.
