Vegetation green up under the influence of daily minimum temperature and urbanization in the Yellow River Basin, China

•The green-up date (GUD) advanced over 1982–2015.•Preseason min-temperature was the dominant factor for GUD advance.•Temperature and precipitation had interaction effects.•Urban-rural phenological differences strongly related to urban heat island effect.
