Past selection shaped phenological differentiation among populations at contrasting elevations in a Mediterranean alpine plant

•Flowering phenology in S. ciliata is genetically differentiated among populations.•Environmentally contrasted populations showed strong phenological differentiation.•Environmental differences were strong enough to generate past diversifying selection.•Populations plastically respond to temperature increase flowering earlier.•Early flowering may be an adaptive advantage to respond to ongoing climate change.
