Effects of on-demand ridesourcing on vehicle ownership, fuel consumption, vehicle miles traveled, and emissions per capita in U.S. States

•We exploit staggered Uber entry to estimate TNC effects in US states via DID.•TNC entry is associated with an average 3% drop in vehicle registrations in US states.•Evidence supports a causal interpretation but cannot definitively establish causality.•TNC entry is also associated with reduced vehicle VOC emissions estimated by EPA.•Results for travel, gasoline consumption, and air pollutants are inconclusive.
