•An improved Riccati transfer matrix method for closed-loop systems is developed.•A spatial dynamics model for a tracked vehicle is established.•Two simplified contact models between the sprocket, track and rollers are proposed.•The effect of the track pre-tension on the transversal vibration of upper track is analyzed.
