Numerical modelling of three-dimensional fatigue crack closure: plastic wake simulation

•Finite element method has been broadly used to study fatigue crack closure.•One critical parameter is the plastic wake length necessary to converge the solution.•Conclusion present recommendations about minimum plastic wake length.•The influence is greater in stress and strain fields results that in crack opening and closure results.
