•Situational awareness (SA) includes recognition, interpretation, and prediction of an event.•Research has shown that lacking SA can lead to human error.•There is no known theory of SA that has been applied to paramedicine.•Improving SA may lead to improved outcomes in paramedicine.•Endsley’s 3-level theory of SA is the most appropriate SA theory for paramedicine.
