•Proposal of secondary surface treatment for strong metal–polymer direct joining.•Nano-needles of boehmite crystal were produced by the secondary treatment.•Injection molded polymer was well interlocked with the nano-needles.•Joining strength was quite enhanced by the secondary surface treatment.
