•A FEM is developed to study the interaction between whipping pipe and restraints.•Influence of sudden rupture and further whip of high energy pipes is studied.•Whip velocity, displacement, restraint force, and energy of the system are analyzed.•Effect of overhang length, initial clearance and restraint count on pipe whip behaviour is investigated.
