One-dimensional study on gas production characteristics of methane hydrate in clayey sediments using depressurization method

•A device equipped with overlying constant water pressure system was applied.•Increase of clay content in confined system causes decrease of gas production rate.•Infiltration of overlying seawater in unconfined system causes low gas production.•The occurrence of sediment compaction will build up the vertical pressure gradient.
