Characteristic and model of phosphate adsorption by activated carbon electrodes in capacitive deionization

•Freundlich model can well describe the phosphate electroadsorption behavior.•CDI electroadsorption is an endothermic process according to thermodynamics.•pH was determined by water electrolysis and forms transformation of phosphate.•Surface charge can reflect the amount of ions adsorbed by GCS model.
