•Mn, Ni, and Co ions existed as +2 valent in β-Al2O3 hexaaluminate structure.•Co-doped oxygen carrier exhibited good reactivity and recyclability.•Mn doping inhibited the lattice oxygen transfer.•Ni doping significantly promoted CH4 pyrolysis.•CO2 regenerated BaFe2CoAl9O19 showed the highest ratio of Fe2+/Fe3+.
