Change points in annual peak streamflows: Method comparisons and historical change points in the United States

•Parametric change-point methods did not work well for peak streamflows.•The Pettitt test had a better false positive rate than other nonparametric methods.•Many changes in median peaks occurred around 1970 based on the Pettitt test.•Median change points had regional patterns, likely related to climate and land use.
