Local support among arctic residents to a land tenure reform in Finnmark, Norway

•Worldwide land tenures have been formalize to accommodate indigenous rights.•In Arctic Norway such arrangements are contested by non-Sami and the Sami alike.•There is a strong opposition to Sami rights by locals sharing the same land.•The concepts of diffuse and specific support can help explain our results.
