Existing rapid chargers use a two-stage module (AC/DC and DC/DC converter) to increase capacity and facilitate fault diagnosis. The number of modules in a modular charger is determined by the capacity. This modular method can improve the paid efficiency. However, if the same module operates continuously, the replacement cycle of the modules can be shortened due to differences in the life spans of modules. Furthermore, modular chargers require high power density. Due to their limited size, all the modules must be changed if the capacity is exceeded. Hence, they must be designed with a high power density. Therefore, this study proposes a rapid charger using a three-level DC/DC converter that constantly operates every module with high efficiency and power density, which can increase capacity using transformers connected in series and parallel.
