•Net ecosystem CH4 exchange (FCH4) was measured in three tropical peat ecosystems.•All ecosystems were CH4 sources, including a drained oil palm plantation.•Annual CH4 emission was significantly different among the ecosystems.•FCH4 displayed exponential responses to groundwater level across the ecosystems.
