An unconventional DCOx favored Co/N-C catalyst for efficient conversion of fatty acids and esters to liquid alkanes

•Selective exposure of the (111) facet of α-Co0 probably leads to unconventional DCOx preferable pathway.•Nitrogen-doping facilitates highly uniform dispersion of Co NPs and stabilizes the NPs against oxidation.•The Co catalyst is versatile towards the conversion of various fatty acids and esters and plant oil.
