•Soil moisture spatial pattern (SMSP) is highly time-stable in rocky environments.•Rock outcrops enhance considerably the heterogeneity and stability of SMSP.•Precipitation can improve the uniformity and stability of the SMSP.•Root-zone SMSP changed differentially during the dry season due to vegetation type.
