Comparative modeling of optical soiling losses for CSP and PV energy systems

•Our measurements show that the soiling-induced efficiency reduction is 8–14 times stronger in CSP than in PV.•Mie scattering simulations can explain that difference.•The simulations facilitate a conversion of the soiling efficiency losses between CSP and PV.•Most representative measurement angles are proposed for soiling measurements in both technologies.
