•Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) can convert near-infrared light (NIR) into visible light.•UCNP-mediated NIR optogenetics allows for deep brain stimulation in mice.•UCNPs can be used as retrograde tracers for neuronal imaging with NIR upconversion microscopy.•UCNP technology may pave the way for minimally invasive deep brain stimulation and imaging.
