•General psychopathological symptoms have an important mediational role in the relationship between traumatic events and psychotic symptoms.•Some traumatic events seem to be associated with the development of specific psychotic symptoms.•Psychotic symptoms seem to develop through specific trajectories due to the traumatic event of sexual abuse.•Some traumatic events showed direct associations with psychotic symptoms.
