Ancient cisterns in the Negev Highlands: Types and spatial correlation with Bronze and Iron Age sites

•Four different types of cisterns were encountered and defined in the studied area.•Each of the cistern types is situated in a particular geological environment.•Each type of cistern shows its own spatial cluster.•Open cisterns have the best spatial correlation with part of the Bronze Age sites.
