•Thermal desorption of H2O and H2 from Al-Zn-Mg powder was studied by TPD-MS.•The kinetic parameters of the surface hydroxide film decomposition were determined.•The obtained activation energy (137 kJ/mol) is comparable to those of Al(OH)3 phases.•H2 desorption involves mechanically-induced and diffusion-limited processes.•An experimental evidence for the break-up of the surface oxide film is provided.
