•Forty-eight per cent of pregnancy loss tissue contains chromosomal abnormalities.•The percentage and type of abnormality detected varies per testing technique.•The percentage of abnormalities is similar in sporadic and recurrent pregnancy loss.•Detecting specific chromosomal abnormalities in such tissue has no clinical benefit.
