•Failure analysis of the 316L valve cores by salt bath nitriding is carried out.•Microcracks can be the rapid corrosion channels of nitrided layer.•The phase distribution is analyzed by X-ray diffraction in detail.•Corrosion resistance of the samples with different grain size is studied.
