Simulated experiment on case overheating failure of solid rocket motor under flight overload condition

•An experimental device to simulate case overheating of SRMs was proposed.•The case temperature response at critical state was measured successfully.•The highest case temperature reached 423 °C at critical state.•Aftereffect heat transfer should be considered for the SRMs with flight overload.
